water displacement

every morning at work i am reminded of science class. we have this coffee maker that holds one pot of water to heat it up and then when you pour another pot it, it 'displaces' that pot and fills with the room temperature water to heat, for the next pot. every time i pour the new pot of water in and the hot water comes out and fills the glass pitcher i think to myself 'water displacement'.

  • When I was in junior high, we had an experiment where we took a bunch of different sized containers and 1 cup of water to the 3rd grade class. Then we poured the cup of water from a short fat container to a tall thin container to a flat dish to a round globe. Each time we asked the 3rd graders which container had more liquid in it.

I forget what we were supposed to learn, but we all learned that third graders are not very smart.
